July course now full, bookings being taken for August and September

The sailing club has planned a number of courses in the coming year. Further courses will be provided as requested. To book a place on any course please, either ring or email the training officer (see contacts page). Courses cost £60 to £90 depending upon duration, however BFYC members benefit from a 50% discount on ALL course fees, so club members only pay £30 or £45 per course. (Most commercial courses are circa £135 ea.)

Each course is geared to both adults and children and generally runs over two successive weekends. We are extending the range of training available this year to include an Adult Level 2 and Youth Level 3 course, covering all topics to develop a beginner, into a confident sailor in moderate conditions, and a RYA Start Racing course as an introduction to club racing. Racing can seem intimidating to beginners - but once sampled will become a path to many enjoyable days on the water; improving and honing skills and learning a whole new vocabulary!

The club provides buoyancy aids, waterproofs and helmets if needed. All instruction complies with the Royal Yachting Association requirements for ‘Approved Sail Training Schools’ and only uses trained instructors who are certificated by the RYA and overseen by our Senior Instructors Craig Allwood and Dave Walton.

The Club has six Toppers, one GP14, one Otter and two newly acquired Laser 2000 dinghies available for use by club members when not being used for club training (there is a small fee to borrow the laser 2000s). Please contact the Training Officer to hire any of the club boats and to ensure their availability on the day you wish to sail. (The Toppers were in great demand last year)

We will also be scheduling a number of Powerboat L2 courses this year. The intention is to get all sailors who provide duty cover on race days, to the minimum level of competency recommended by the RYA. Who do you want driving the rescue boat when you’re in the water trying to right a capsized dinghy?

If there is anything else you think we should be doing, drop us a note. However, we do leave things like Day Skipper and Yachtmaster etc. to the Nautical College in Fleetwood. They have the necessary resources and skills to provide the detailed level of training needed to satisfactorily complete this level of course.
